K-pop band Big Bang brings the house down

Even with just three members, out of the original five, K-pop band Big Bang brought the house down last night (Sept 23) with loads of energy and declarations of love for their Singapore fans.

In just one hour, the trio - Seungri, 20, G-Dragon, 23 and TOP, 23 - brought out seven songs, to which every single teenage girl fan sang along to. This resulted in a fast-paced concert that matched songs like Seungri's White Love*; G-Dragon and TOP's Oh Yeah, where they exchanged rapid fire verses of rap in Korean without missing a beat.

This brought the end of day one of the F1 weekend to a high and set the standards for the following concerts to come.

*Seungri didn't actually sing White Love.

K-pop stars at F1 leave fans high and wanting more

You gotta hand it to the Korean boys — they sure know how to work a crowd.

Three out of five members of the massively popular boy band Big Bang — G-Dragon, T.O.P and Seungri — drove fans wild with their polished dance moves and infectious tracks at the Padang main stage on Friday night for the 2011 Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix.

We're not just talking about two or three all-too-passionate fan girls here, but thousands of them, including many teen boys, too.

Most fans were stationed at their "posts" right in front of the stage as early as 7pm, when the gates to the exclusive Fan Zone were opened. (A reminder to those who don't want to miss the chance to watch the upcoming concerts at the Padang up-close, be sure to collect your wristbands at stage front as they're limited to 2,000 fans per day from 3pm on a first-come-first-served basis.)

For a brief ten minutes after the scheduled start of the performance — possibly what could have felt like eternity to many — fans were treated to a DJ-set of creative mashups from some of K-pop's greatest hits.

Seungri, 20, kicked off the night with his latest EP "VVIP".

Clad in a clean black suit complete with a skinny tie, Seungri delivered two more songs — "What Can I Do" and "Strong Baby" — to a smitten crowd before passing the stage on to his team mates.
And boy did the dangerous duo take the stage by storm.

Better known as GD&TOP, the talented 23-year-olds easily brought the house down with their trademark upbeat songs "Knock Out" and "Oh Yeah".

Fans scream themselves hoarse in response to their favourite songs by GD&TOP. (Yahoo! photo)

Shouted G-Dragon to a crowd that looked like it was running on some kind of potent energy drink, "Thank you for inviting us here. We love F1, we love this city, we love you all!"

"So, we're gonna make you crazy tonight. So please show me your love okay?"

At many points, the Fan Zone at the Padang could almost be likened to a club perpetually pumped with fans screaming themselves hoarse in response to their favourite songs, most, if not all, of which they could sing and even dance along to.

"High High" was another crowd favourite, as the boys danced their way deeper into their fans' hearts.

Following screams for an encore after the duo thanked the crowd

The trio ended the night with "How Gee," which saw GD throwing a towel earlier wrapped around his neck to one lucky fan.

"It's awesome; they're so handsome. Oppa, sarang hae! (Brother, I love you!)," screamed a group of seven girls after the concert ended. With the youngest aged 19 and the oldest, 34, the animated fans told Yahoo! Singapore that they had flown to Singapore from Indonesia just to catch their favourite boys live in action.

Said another fan, Noraini Siti, a marketing executive, "They're just really hot and sexy, as compared to the other Korean boy bands."

Added her friend, "They wasted time on the starting part — the DJ part — I don't think it's important… They (the boys) could have performed more rather than (the DJ) playing all those songs, remixes and all."

The 25-year-old and her friends, who came down especially for the one-night-only showcase, added that the race was more of "a bonus".

GDTOPVI in KWM Malaysia 2011 Malaysian Star Newspaper

Seven South Korean acts put up an awesome performance during the Korean Music Wave 2011 at Stadium Merdeka.

YOU can’t argue with K-pop daebak (literally meaning K-pop is awesome or the best), a pop music phenomenon which is the rage here! Amid frenzied scenes of pop adulation, the Korean Music Wave 2011 concert underlined the genre’s popularity at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday night.

The biggest K-pop concert in Malaysia (to date), the screamfest was headlined by Big Bang’s Seungri and GD & TOP, and featured Park Jung Min, FT Island, U-KISS, Teen Top and girl group 4Minute.

The screaming never stopped as the seven sizzling South Korean acts wowed 10,000 K-pop fans made up of VIPs (Big Bang fans), Primadonnas (FT Island fans), KissMes (U-KISS fans), 4nias (4Minute fans), Angels (Teen Top fans) and Park Jung Min fans.

By the time it was Big Bang’s turn to perform, the crowd was on their feet, with some perched on plastic chairs while others moved to the grass where they could bounce and groove freely.

Looking dashing in a suit, Big Bang’s Seungri got fans leaping with joy when he declared that “Malaysian fans are bagus”, then serenaded them with VVIP, What Can I Do and Strong Baby.

While the rest of the acts kept to a black-and-white theme, GD & TOP were a riot in their colourful outfits as they ran about the stage belting out High High, Oh Yeah and Knock Out. Making their debut performance here, the duo were pleasantly surprised that local fans could sing Korean songs.

A blast of pyrotechnics and golden streamers took the show to its grand finale but fans waited around to watch their idols being shuttled off in vans.

The show may be over but my ears are still ringing with fans screamingsaranghae! (We love you), bogoshipoyo! (We miss you!).

"Haru Haru" to be Released in Japan in November

On November 23rd, Big Bang will release a new album in Japan called, “The Best of Big Bang“.

According to reports from Japanese media outlet Sankei Sports, the album will feature 14 songs sung in Japanese, one of which being their famous track, “Haru Haru“.

“Haru Haru” was released back in August of 2008, and it’s become one of Big Bang’s most popular songs, earning nearly 22 million views on YouTube. A survey was held in mid-September which asked, “Which Korean song do you want to hear in Japanese?“, and “Haru Haru” was chosen with nearly 9,000 votes, totalling to 90% of the overall count. It’s said that the boys decided to release a ‘best-of’ album due to the immense popularity of these survey results.

Sankei Sports also reported that this version of “Haru Haru” will feature vocals from member Daesung, who’s currently put a hold on his promotions with the group due to a car accident scandal earlier this year.

Big Bang’s leader G-Dragon shared, “This is a special album that was made for our Japanese promotions, and so we gathered all the songs which our Japanese fans specifically wanted to hear. We’ve worked hard on this album to please our fans.”

Se7en, T.O.P, Seungri visit G-Dragon at North Face shoot [NEWS]

[Rough translation] G-Dragon was there at a studio at YongJangKwan for a shoot. There's been false information that the shoot was canceled. It went on, but it was all hush hush. The shoot finished at around 6PM, then he left. The agency vans were at the front entrance, blocking it. After the shoot, he went out at the back exit.

Some members of the YG Family visited him to encourage and cheer him on. Seven, T.O.P, and Seungri came, also stylist Yang Seungho. They stayed with G-Dragon for 3-4 hours, cheering him on.

A staff at the site said that G-Dragon was really cheered up when he saw Seven visiting him because Seven is like his greatest hyung. G-Dragon finished the shoot and it all packed up quietly, and none of the other YG Agency officials or YG himself visited.

YGE explained about the upcoming GD&TOP Japanese Album!

Since G-Dragon was under the suspension of indictment for the suspicion of smoking marijuana, a lot of focus and attention is being placed on his future activities. Today, the Japanese side released a statement that “there won’t be any big problems for album sales”, which also became the center of attention.

G-Dragon was planned to promote the single album 'Oh Yeah' in Japan on November 9th under the duo GD&TOP with exceptional activities. This album was highly anticipated by fans since it was the first project under the collaboration of YG Entertainment and Japan Avex.

However, the announcement of the charge made on October 5th will impact GD&TOP’s and BIGBANG’s activities. YG Entertainment has been busy coming up with a strategy to handle this. A high executive from YG expresses that they will be changing a lot of the plans for BIGBANG, GD&TOP, etc, and that G-Dragon is undergoing deep self-reflection.

Yang Hyun Suk says: “Since G-Dragon received a suspension of indictment, we received the response from Japan that there won’t be any major problems with album sales. Although it wasn’t intentional, G-Dragon and YGE still shoulder responsibility and guilt for the incident. There’s also an issue of moral responsibility, and we need to consider a lot of factors. We are still worried (about whether album sale should be postponed)”. Moreover, G-Dragon as a CF endorser has a lot of contracts in effect. Although the companies for the endorsements were shocked when they heard the results of the prosecutor's investigation, they were able to quickly stabilize the situation.

G-Dragon is currently endorsing: CJ, G Market, LG Smart Phone Optimus BIG, Soul by Ludacris, The North Face, Nikon, and Beanpole, etc. A YG representative says: “The companies so far have not reacted with violent dissatisfaction nor have they threatened to sue. We are very thankful to them for giving us their understanding”.

Suspension of indictment means: although the suspect is guilty of the crime, but taking into consideration factors such as the suspect’s age, environment, motives, methods, etc. Compared to when someone already with a previous record, the prosecutor will not officially indict the first time offender in order to give him a second chance to abide by the law.

Announcement on the cancellation of GD&TOP's Japanese single release [NEWS]

Translation:

Quote :
Member of BIGBANG, G-Dragon, was investigated by the prosecutor's office in Seoul (South Korea) due to suspicion of smoking marijuana last May. The result of the drug test came out positive but there weren't any legal penalties because only the hair test was positive. (Prosecutor's interview here)

Avex and YG Entertainment had a discussion after Avex heard the announcement. G-Dragon received a suspension of indictment but the news has an influence on (how he will be viewed by) Japanese society*. Because of this, Avex has considered this fact sincerely and has decided to cancel the release of GD&TOP's Japanese single, Oh Yeah (feat Bom of 2NE1) on November 9th, even if the incident happened before they had a contract with Avex.

We apologize to everyone and to all of the fans for this incident. We will try our best so that something like this will not happen ever again.

Avex Entertainment Oct 6th 2011

Translation by Noriko @ bigbangupdates.com
*Note: A popular Japanese celebrity was jailed just recently because of drugs. Even if G-Dragon isn't guilty, people reported with anything related to drugs are typically viewed badly.

YG Entertainment reveals postponement of GD&TOP’s Japanese album was voluntary

YG Entertainment has revealed that the postponement of GD&TOP‘s Japanese album was a voluntary decision made by both their officials and avex Entertainment.

Through OSEN, representatives stated, “We’d like to apologize for concerning our fans with such an issue. We’ve decided that it would not be proper to continue with our Japanese promotions in such a situation and made a request to avex Entertainment to postpone GD&TOP’s Japanese album release.”

They continued, “Although some seem to think that Big Bang‘s Japanese activities will be greatly affected by this controversy, they are merely assumptions made by people who don’t know the entire situation. avex Entertainment did not inform YG that the album will be canceled – it was a decision made by the cooperation of both parties. The notification put up on avex’s homepage was, of course, discussed by both parties before its release.”

Big Bang postpones DVD + best-of album release after G-Dragon’s scandal [NEWS]

After BIGBANG leader G-Dragon became wrapped up in a marijuana scandal earlier this week, Universal Music Japan announced that two of the group’s upcoming releases will be postponed.

BIGBANG had originally planned to release a live DVD titled “BIGBANG PRESENTS ‘LOVE & HOPE TOUR 2011′” on October 19th, followed by a best-of album titled “THE BEST OF BIGBANG” on November 23rd. However, both have been indefinitely postponed after discussing the matter with YG Entertainment and taking social influences into account.

Additionally, the GD&TOP unit under avex Entertainment has put their Japanese debut single “OH YEAH feat. BOM (from 2NE1)” on hold.

Big Bang featured on Ryan Seacrest's blog!

In the past, TV personality Ryan Seacrest has praised girl group KARA on their catchy music and colorful MV for “Step.” It seems his interest in Kpop has not waned as he has just featured Big Bang on his blog.

The author mentions Big Bang’s nomination for “Best World Wide Act” for the 2011 MTV EMA, and remarked that the “Crazy, Colorful Boy band“‘s music “has fun beats that can easily be a favorite at a dance club“. The author also mentions that G Dragon‘s cover of Maroon 5‘s “This Love” is “equally cool and modern“, and also that the MV showed “style and pizzazz“.

This only further proves that Big Bang is steadily at the forefront of the Hallyu wave, being acknowledged overseas as a reputable artist!

YG reduces IPO size as marijuana use adds risk to Korea pop [NEWS]

Article from Bloomberg: (Important points re: YG/BIGBANG at the end of the post)

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- YG Entertainment Co., which manages the Korean boy band Big Bang, lowered the amount it’s seeking in its initial public offering after the band’s leader tested positive for marijuana use.

G-Dragon’s drug use could be a “constraint” for the band’s activities for a while, YG said in a revised prospectus submitted to Korea Exchange Inc. yesterday. Big Bang’s concerts may be delayed and revenue from commercials could fall, the company said. Big Bang and its members accounted for more than half of the company’s total sales in 2010, YG said.

YG is seeking as much as 35.9 billion won ($31 million), less than the 39.9 billion won it had earlier sought as Big Bang played to full stadiums in Japan and fans flocked to female quartet 2NE1, which is also managed by the company. Shares of listed rival S.M. Entertainment Co. more than tripled this year, even as the benchmark Kospi Index slumped 9.5 percent.

“A short-term impact on earnings is inevitable given that G-Dragon was YG’s flagship artist and helped lift the company to the top ranks in the Korean music industry,” Choi Woong Pil, a Seoul-based fund manager at KB Asset Management Co., which manages $23 billion in assets, said in an interview. “It won’t end interest in the IPO because its main rival S.M. continues to perform really well and YG’s potential is intact.”

Deep Regret

YG declined to make G-Dragon, whose off-stage name is Kwon Ji Yong, available for comment. The singer unwittingly accepted what he thought was a regular tobacco cigarette from a fan during a tour of Japan in May and took “two or three puffs” before throwing it in a toilet, the company said in a statement on Oct. 5.

“Prosecutors decided not to indict G-Dragon as he didn’t have intention to smoke drugs and extremely small traces of marijuana were detected from tests,” YG said in that statement. “G-Dragon and the company deeply regret and apologize for not being more careful.”

YG plans to set up an “artist risk management” team, the company said in yesterday’s prospectus. An artist’s image tends to affect revenue of entertainment companies, YG said.

Orders for stock in the IPO will be taken on Nov. 14-15, compared with the previous schedule of Oct. 12-13, the sale document said. The company is seeking to sell almost 1.25 million shares at 22,100 won to 28,800. It earlier offered them at 24,600 won to 32,000 won.

Music Charts

YG’s stock price was 64,000 won on Oct. 18 in the over-the- counter market, according to the website of online equity exchange pstock.co.kr in Seoul. That’s down from 69,000 won on Oct. 5.

South Korean pop, or “K-pop,” acts promoted by S.M. Entertainment dominate the nation’s music charts. S.M.’s biggest boy band, Super Junior, and main female group Girls Generation were the top album sellers last year, according to South Korea’s Hanteo music chart.

Girls Generation’s videos, including “Run Devil Run,” and Super Junior’s “Mr. Simple” have generated tens of millions of views globally on Google Inc.’s YouTube. Shares of smaller label JYP Entertainment Corp. have climbed 163 percent in 2011 on the chart strength of its bands such as Miss A.

It was that kind of success that made YG decide to go public, Chief Operating Officer Choi Sung Jun said in a phone interview on Oct. 10.

YG Concert in Japan shooting for a record 30 billion won in ticket sales [NEWS]

YG Entertainment is shooting for the largest ticket sales in the shortest time in the Korean music industry history.

YG Entertainment will hold a total of 4 concerts titled, ’15th Anniversary YG Family Concert’ with 2 dates in Kyocera Dome in Japan (1/7 and 1/8/2012) and the again 2 dates in Saitama Super Arena near Tokyo (1/21-1/22/2012).

Given the fact that 2NE1, managed by YG Entertainment, has sold out their Japanese tour starting the end of September through the beginning of this month and that Big Bang’s Daesung will be back after 8 months on hiatus after the car accident, YG Family’s first Japanese concert has many aspects that can draw a lot of attention. It’s expected that the tickets will be sold out.

If the concerts in Japan are sold out, it will gather a total of 160,000 in the audience. SM Entertainment has gathered about 150,000 people for the 3 dates in September at Tokyo Dome and this would push their numbers above and beyond.

As verified by Star News, YG Family concert ticket in Japan will sell for 12,800 Japanese Yen, which translates to about 190,000 KRW. If all 160,000 tickets are sold, the ticket sales alone will bring in 30,300,000,000 KRW ($26.26 million at press time).

Such sales would be the largest sum in the shortest time period by any Korean artist or any company brand concert.

The 15th anniversary of YG Entertainment is celebrated with the YG Family Concert in Korea as well, in December this year. On December 3rd and 4th, there will be 3 concerts at the Seoul Gymnastics Stadium with 40,000 audience members. The tickets in Korea will sell for 88,000 KRW per, bringing the total to 3,200,000,000 KRW.

New York Daily News: 5 Must-Hear K-Pop Groups (111023) [NEWS]

New York Daily News ran an article about Hallyu and the SM Town concert in NYC today, and they ended the article with a "5 Must-Hear K-Pop Groups" list, in which Big Bang is included. Here's the list:

Ready to dip your toe into the Korean Wave? Here are the top five South Korean acts that will help immerse you in the world of K-Pop:

2NE1
Unlike other Korean girl groups who capitalize on sex appeal or being saccharine and cutesy, this group rose to the top of the charts for their anthems on girl power and boy bashing. When they aren't dominating the charts in Korea and Japan, the group — Dara, Bom, Minzy and leader CL — are making a statement in the fashion world. Often described as "fierce," this fearless foursome express their style through fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Proenza Schouler, Balmain and Jeremy Scott, who has become one of the band's biggest supporters. Catch them repping South Korea as one of the Best Bands of the World nominated by MTV Iggy.
Download this: "I Am the Best," a catchy electronic beat with a bass-friendly undertone.

Big Bang
After debuting their signature hip-pop sound in 2006, the five-member team dominated the South Korean charts and later did the same in Japan. First topping the charts with the upbeat single "Lies," the band has since become one of Asia's most recognizable acts. And with a collaboration with Major Lazer's Diplo on one song by members G-Dragon and T.O.P. called "Knockout," it seems like Asia's not the only place they're receiving attention.
Download this: "Tonight," a perfect mélange of rock and electronica with a bumping beat.

Report cards for idol groups revealed, which groups have been dominating this year? [NEWS]

Much like last year, thus far in 2011, the Korean music industry has been dominated by idols. With top idol groups promoting overseas as part of the Hallyu wave, their influence has spread beyond Asia into Europe and South America as well.

With that said, the “report cards” (aka the album and digital sales) of boy groups and girl groups for this year were compared.

▶ Idol groups’ impact on the music industry
According to the results of Gaon Chart this year (from January 2nd to October 1st), idols have placed 51 songs out of the top 100 songs on the digital chart.

The idols that make up the top ranks include Hallyu’s top idol groups: T-ara, 2NE1, Big Bang, f(x), CNBLUE, B2ST, miss A, SECRET, SISTAR, etc.

When the album chart was reviewed, it was clear that idols had a stronger influence on album sales than in digital sales. For the album charts from the same period, idol groups had 69 albums out of the top 100, and the entire top 10 (from 1st to 10th) were all albums belonging to idol groups.

▶ Girl groups dominate online sales (mp3), while boy groups dominate offline sales (CD)
Girl groups clearly dominated the digital charts. Out of the 51 idol group songs in the top 100, 31 (61%) of those were by girl groups.

In contrast, boy groups had a strong hold over the offline or physical album sales this year. The top 10 album sales for this year (with the exception of KARA at 8th place) were all from boy groups. Super Junior, TVXQ, and JYJ comprised of the the top 3 album sales this year.

Choi Kang Ho, director of the Music Contents Industry Association (which runs Gaon Chart) stated, “For offline or album sales, the majority of the consumers are made up of loyal fans of idol groups rather than regular music fans… Boy groups, who have more intimate fans compared to girl groups, have been showing high album sales.”

▶ Girl groups to dominate the rest of the year
Girl groups are expected to continue their streak for the remainder of this year. With groups such as SNSD, Wonder Girls, T-ara, and SECRET having already made or planning to make their respective comebacks by November of this year, the fans’ anticipation has been growing.

In addition, the popular boy groups will all be targeting the overseas market, leaving the Korean market wide open for the girl groups to dominate.

Although there is much support for idols and their music, there has also been growing concern over the imbalance of the current music industry. One album producer stated, “With producers all jumping on the bandwagon of producing for idol groups, the idol market has become saturated… To solve the imbalance of the Korean music industry and the continuous progress of Hallyu, investments must be made in other genres.”

MTV EMA Worldwide Act Nominee Spotlight: Big Bang

This week, we’re spotlighting each of the five Worldwide Act nominees, and today it’s all about BIGBANG. The South Korean boy band beat out Agnes Monica, Exile, Gotye, Jane Zhang, Jay Chou, and Sia for the honour of being the first act to represent Asia Pacific in the race for the new Worldwide Act EMA.

As their moniker might suggest, BIGBANG make a splash, with their catchy hip-hop/dance pop and their suave fashion style—and after attaining megastardom in their home country, they’re starting to gain recognition internationally.

The five-piece group (Daesung, G-Dragon, Seungri, Taeyang, and T.O.P.) topped the charts in 2007 with their single “Lies” in Korea and won the Seoul Music Award for Artist of the Year—among other honours—that year. BIGBANG went on to amass fans in Japan and win awards there. They scored Best Pop Video and Best New Artist trophies at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2010.

After a hiatus when the group members focused on pursuing side and solo projects, they returned with a—wait for it—bang. Their 2011 release ‘Tonight’ was the first K-pop, or South Korean pop, album to hit the iTunes top 10.

You can vote for Worldwide Act and the other open MTV EMA categories through 4th November. The winners will be announced on 6th November at the 2011 MTV EMA in Belfast, airing on MTV at 9 PM CET (9 PM GMT in the U.K.).

The top thirty list of nominees for the 2011 Melon Music Awards has been revealed.

The award show, which is jointly organised by Loen Entertainment and MBC Plus Media, will hold its first round of online voting from October 27th to November 6th.

The top thirty nominees will be whittled down to ten in a process that takes into account album scores (80%) and online votes (20%). Results of the first round of voting will be released on Melon's homepage on November 7th.

The second round of voting will begin immediately after the first one ends, with the eventual winner claiming the top prize at the awards show.

Names like Kim Bumsoo, Park Junghyun and Huh Gak -- all of whom gained immense popularity through reality shows "I Am A Singer" and "Super Star K3" -- were included in the list of nominees.

The other nominees include 10cm, 2NE1, 2PM, 4Men, 4Minute, Girls Day, Davichi, DBSK, Leessang, Mighty Mouse, Baek Jiyoung, B2ST, Big Bang, Secret, Super Junior, Sunny Hill, Sistar, CN BLUE, IU, f(x), Infinite, K.Will, G.NA, GD&TOP, Miss A and Zia.

(Note: Only those with Korean SS Numbers can vote.)

Only 3 members of Big Bang perform at K-Pop Super Concert

On the 28th at 7:30 p.m, Korean star Ha Ji Won and Kim Hyun Joong emceed K Pop Super Concert, which was held at Busan Gwang-An Beach. U Kiss started off the concert with “Neverland” and “Man Man Ha Ni”.

Also, T-ara, Jay Park, ZE:A, Sistar, Double A, Kim Hyun Joong, Big Bang’s Seungri, T.O.P, Taeyang, Se7en, Shinee, Psy, and Kara gave a breathtaking performance.

It was a shame that not all the members of Big Bang and Kara were able to perform due to some unavoidable reasons.

Daesung, who is having time for self-reflection after a car accident, and G-Dragon, who has had his indictment suspended, didn’t join the stage. Therefore, the members of Big Bang had to be satisfied with their solo stages.

Seungri sang “What Can I Do” and “Strong Baby”. Even though he slipped and fell during the stage, he finished the performance undaunted.

Taeyang sang “Where You At”, “I Will Be There” and “Super Star”. Taeyang stated, “I am glad to perform on such a nice stage. I hope you enjoy the concert until the very end.”

T.O.P captivated the audience with his solo “Turn It Up” and “Digital Bounce”, a duet with se7en.

Park Gyuri of Kara couldn’t join the stage. According to DSP Media, she wasn’t able to attend due to the musical concert of Beautiful Girl, which is held in Japan. Gyuri will be performing the musical all across Asia until the 6th of next month.

Psy also brightened the stage. He made the fans excited by singing “Right Now” and “Shake It”.

Ha Ji Won made a special appearance on Double A’s debut song “Because I’m Crazy” and showed a sexy wave.

MTV EMA Blog: Dress up like Big Bang this Halloween [MISC]

From MTV EMA Blog:

EMA-Inspired Last-Minute Halloween Costumes
So it’s down to the wire and you still haven’t come up with any ideas for this year’s Halloween costume? No worries! Take some inspiration from the many 2011 MTV EMA nominees with signature style…that is surprisingly easy to copy on the cheap. In fact, you can probably throw together any one of these looks by raiding your own closet, your roommate’s, and/or your parents’. (OK, and maybe picking up a wig.)

To maximize the celebrity-lookalike effect (and deflect “You totally just threw that together at the last minute, didn’t you?” remarks), enlist your equally procrastinatory friends to join you in a group costume.

LMFAO
Wild wigs; oversize white-frame glasses; equally oversize colored T-shirts; still more oversize chain necklace and medallion; and baggy jeans: Boom, you and your BFF will be party rockin’ on Halloween night.

Jessie J
Black hair with blunt-cut bangs, black eyeliner, black lipstick, a black leather jacket, a black dress, black fishnets…and a black cast on one foot. That’s all it takes to transform you into Britain’s breakout pop star of 2011!

Eminem
This costume is more about attitude than accessories. Just cock your baseball cap and walk around in a white T-shirt, baggy jeans, and sneakers. If some hapless partygoer dares to ask, “Who are you supposed to be?” or “Is that even a costume?”, scowl darkly and snap, “I’m ***** Eminem, *****! Don’t ***** with me!”

Katy Perry
The possibilities are pretty much endless! So if your engineering skills aren’t up to devising a bustier that shoots whipped cream, do the lazy girl’s Katy costume by simply dyeing a blonde wig pink and wearing candy-colored makeup, plus the figure-hugging and/or wacky ensemble of your choice.

Big Bang
Round up a posse of pals to go out together in sleek black suits with pops of bright color peeking out: think gloves or a dress shirt. Voila—you’re Korea’s hottest boy band in their latest style incarnation. So what if they’re not a household name in your nabe? In a year, your friends will remember how totally ahead of the curveyou were.

Selena Gomez
This one’s a no-brainer: Copy the rapper look from her MTV EMA teaser with a flannel shirt, a bandana, jeans, and gold hoop earrings—though for going out in public on the night when creeps tend to come out, a cropped tank is probably a wiser bet than a bra. For bonus points, have a lookalike friend don a girlie white flowy top and black shorts to play the sweet side of Selena.

Happy Halloween!
